Women's Tennis Succeeds Over Le Moyne on Senior Day, 4-3

Garden City, N.Y. - On a day when the Panthers honored their graduating seniors, the Adelphi University women's tennis team also picked up a crucial 4-3 win over NE10 arch-rival Le Moyne College Saturday at the Adelphi Tennis Courts.

The match is the latest meeting between the two teams since Adelphi upset Le Moyne in the semifinals of last season's NE10 Championship.

Adelphi improved to 6-3 overall and 5-2 against NE10 competition, while Le Moyne now stands at 6-4 and 4-3 in conference play.

The finish at the No. 1 doubles flight made all the difference in the contest. With the team doubles point hanging in the balance, Amanda Franstedt and Katarina Liedbeck went to a tiebreaker with Le Moyne's Francesca Lilliegren and Stella Simeonova, and prevailed 7-6 (7-3).

That gave the Panthers all the momentum they would need.

Sanne Selmer Gilje led off singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top flight. Caterina Federici won in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 singles, and Julia Kielan -- on her Senior Day -- put the finishing touches on the match with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 result at No. 5 singles.

Kielan was reocgnized in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony, along with fellow honorees Jenelle Downer and Amanda Franstedt.

Only two more regular-season matches remain for Adelphi, which is next in action tomorrow (Oct. 9) in a 1 p.m. first serve at Assumption University.
