Manchester, N.H. - Off the most unreal of re-starts,
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca's 27th-minute goal was the difference maker for the No. 17 Adelphi University men's soccer team Saturday in a 2-1 win at Saint Anselm College at Melucci Field.
After Saint Anselm (6-6, 3-4 NE10) leveled the score six seconds earlier, Descalzo -- off the re-start whistle -- planted a miraculous shot into the opposition's net from midfield, with the keeper off his line.
An own goal in Adelphi's (6-1-4, 3-1-2 NE10) favor got the scoring started in the contest. Almost fifteen minutes into the match, Descalzo played a diagonal for
Jesper Mikkelsen, but the pass struck a defender and trickled by the Saint Anselm keeper.
Senior keeper
Daniel De La Heras was stout in preserving the one-goal lead for the Panthers, who are now unbeaten in their last six contests.
The Madrid, Spain native stopped all three shots he faced in the final 45 minutes. Most notably, in the 53rd minute, De La Heras made a diving save at the left post to keep a Jackson Bukunt strike out of the net.
Saint Anselm held a 15-13 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Hawks got a corner in the final seconds, but were unable to get a crisp opportunity against the Adelphi defense.
Head Coach
Gary Book and the Panthers return home to play University of New Haven in NE10 action Tuesday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m. at Motamed Field.
