Garden City, N.Y. - A couple of first goals of the season for
Callum Walmsley and
Jesper Mikkelsen highlighted a 3-0 win for the Adelphi University men's soccer team against NE10 rival University of New Haven on Tuesday night at Motamed Field.
Leading into the contest, the Panthers climbed up the United Soccer Coaches Division II rankings for a third-consecutive week, sliding in at No. 13 in the poll.
Senior keeper
Daniel De La Heras was tested early and kept the slate clean, before Adelphi (7-1-4, 4-1-2 NE10) broke the ice midway through the first half.
In the 25th minute,
Victor Castel put home his second goal in his last three games, after cleaning up a
Patrick Wilson rebound off a corner opportunity.
Another corner expanded Adelphi's lead later in the half. This time, in the 39th minute, Walmsley -- at his 6-foot-6 frame -- got up to head home a
Matthew Lynch corner before halftime.
The Panthers dominated possession in the opening half, to the tune of a 64 percent clip.
While shots were almost even in the final 45 minutes, Mikkelsen put any chance of a comeback to rest with a sharp-angle strike in the 63rd minute.
As part of Adelphi Spirit Weekend, the Panthers will host The College of Saint Rose for an NE10 tilt Saturday (Oct. 15) at 7 p.m. at Motamed Field.
