Garden City, N.Y. - Even playing shorthanded for much of the match, the No. 23 Adelphi University women's soccer team overcame that shortfall in a 2-0 win against Bentley University in NE10 action Friday night at Motamed Field.
Following its long-awaited return to the national rankings, Adelphi (8-2-1, 6-0-1 NE10) stretched its unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games -- the program's longest since 2017.
Before
Krista Aliscio was sent off with a red card in the 18th minute, the Panthers had already taken the lead.
Almost six minutes into the match,
Madison Apicella bent a corner into the box that
Alexa Mihale finished with her head at the far post, staking Adelphi to the early 1-0 lead.
Once the Panthers were down to ten players, Bentley (3-5-3, 2-4-1 NE10) threw a spattering of shots at
Lydia Fraga Cordoba. In her first six minutes of work, Cordoba faced three shots on goal and stopped them all.
While playing shorthanded, the Brown and Gold tacked on another goal in the first half. This time, Apicella found herself on the other side of the scoresheet with her league-leading sixth goal of the year, off a long run by
Kayla Mushorn.
Bentley only managed one shot in the second half, as Cordoba preserved the shutout in goal. Cordoba's five saves were a season-high, in her second action of the year.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will next square off with Franklin Pierce University in a crucial NE10 showdown on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at Motamed Field at 4 p.m.
