Orangeburg, N.Y. - Led by senior
Samantha Collins, the Adelphi University volleyball team prevailed in a 3-1 non-conference victory at Dominican College Thursday evening.
Collins, who led the Panthers (10-8) with 12 kills, was one of three in double-figures as
Noelle Alberda and
Macarty McQueen both pulled in 10 kills each. McQueen nabbed another double-double, accounting for 12 digs with
Brenna Valsted nearing her season high in assists at 41 in the four-set match.
After the Brown and Gold secured a 25-16 set one victory, the home team came back to even the match by stealing a 25-23 decision. Collins notched a kill that made the score 22-22 but Dominican reached set point and closed out the frame with a kill from leading scorer Elizabth Perez.
The Panthers used an 8-1 run in the early going of the third frame to take an 11-3 lead over the Chargers, who would only go on to score seven more points throughout the set. Adelphi used a .476 team hitting percentage with 14 kills to move ahead in the non-conference contest, holding its opponents to just three kills and a negative mark from the attack.
The eventual final set played out much like the first, with the visitors taking an early lead. The hosts staged a comeback and managed to take a narrow lead, but contributions from McQueen and four straight Charger miscues allowed Adelphi to regain the edge at 21-16.
Jamaya Harris closed out the set - and game - with back-to-back service aces, contributing to the Panthers' nine for the contest.
Adelphi returns to the Center for Recreation and Sports on Saturday, Oct. 8 when they host Le Moyne college in an NE10 matchup. Opening serve is set for 1:00 p.m. as the team
supports the Sideout Foundation with its annual Dig Pink event. A representative from the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline support organization will also be on site.
