Oceanside, N.Y. - In its most close-knit match yet this year, the Adelphi University women's tennis team fell 4-3 to University of New Haven in NE10 action Wednesday at the Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside.
Although
Julia Kielan and
Caterina Federici triumphed 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, New Haven (6-3, 4-2 NE10) had already stamped the doubles point in its favor.
In singles,
Amanda Franstedt quickly leveled the match with her 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory at the No. 3 flight. Franstedt is a near-perfect 5-1 in conference singles matches this season.
Kielan continued her spectacular singles play of late with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision at No. 4 singles that -- at the time -- got the Panthers (5-3, 4-2 NE10) to within 3-2.
Carolina Chaves followed that up with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set victory at fifth singles that got Adelphi even again.
In a winner-take-all contest at No. 6 singles,
Jenelle Downer set the tone with a 6-2 first-set result, before a 6-7 (4-7) tiebreaker led to UNH's Alexa Orlando rally for the team victory.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers will next host Le Moyne College on Saturday (Oct. 8) in their Senior Day match at noon in Garden City.
