West Haven, CT - In a rematch of the season opener, the Adelphi University field hockey team lost in a shootout against New Haven on Saturday afternoon by a final decision of 3-2.
This was the Panthers' (8-7, 7-2 NE10) first shootout since the program returned back in 2008.
Once the whistle blew to begin the game, the Cats took advantage on the offensive side with a goal coming off a penalty corner that was brought in by
Bianca Bachisin and scored by sophomore
Amanda Lee. It didn't take long for the Chargers to tie the game, as they capitalized on a penalty corner that was scored by Sophia Ruh and assisted by Sophie Schreck.Â
As the second quarter started, New Haven's Abby Nixon put one into the back of the cage off an assist by Olivia Chase to give the Chargers the lead. The first half ended with New Haven (8-7, 7-2 NE10) up by one goal.
In the third period, it didn't take long for the Brown and Gold to score the equalizer - Bachisin put in a top-of-the-corner shot that went past Chargers' goalie Keira Integlia and was assisted by
Kylie Peregoy. Both teams could not capitalize on any counter-attacks in the remaining of the period. Â
The fourth frame went on and neither team put one into the back of the cage resulting in another overtime matchup for the pair of teams. It was the Panthers' fourth game going into overtime this season, matching its highest since 2019.Â
In overtime, both sides did not score, meaning the game went into a shootout.
It took six chances for each team to get it past the goalie and into the back of the cage. The Chargers went on to score two goals to the Panthers one goal in a dramatic finish.
The Panthers will come back to Motamed Field on Wednesday, Nov. 2 as they play St. Thomas Aquinas at 4:00 p.m. in a conference battle. The game is dedicated to the Make-A-Wish foundation and there will be a blanket giveaway for the first 25 Adelphi fans in attendance.
