Field Hockey Takes Down STAC, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team defeated Northeast-10 opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College 3-1 on Wednesday evening that was led by three different goal scorers.

The contest started off in favor for the Spartans' offensive side with a goal in the first couple of minutes of the game from Kelly Johnson off a backhand shot that went straight into the cage to give STAC (8-7, 6-4 NE10) the early lead. The Panthers straggled two penalty corners in the last few minutes but were unsuccessful to put one through.

In the second period, Adelphi (9-7, 8-3 NE10) collected their first shot on goal from sophomore Ali Nagy but it was saved in the end by Jessie Hohenstein. At the 25:26 mark, sophomore Amanda Lee shot one into the back of the cage off a pass from freshman Jocelyn Hild who notched her first collegiate assist of her career. The game was tied at one at the end of the first half.

Once the second half began, both teams struggled to find a way to score. The lone shot on goal came from the Spartans' Jasmijn Van Drunen off a penalty corner that was swept away from freshman Mirthe Karstens to keep the game tied.

It didn't take long for the Cats to score in the fourth quarter - coming off a penalty corner setup that was assisted by graduate student Bianca Bachisin and scored by redshirt-freshman Emiline Biggin off a top of the half circle shot that gave the Panthers the late edge. Adelphi would end up scoring an insurance goal within the last four minutes of the contest, off another penalty corner setup that was scored by Bachisin and assisted by junior Kylie Peregoy.

Bachisin is now tied with graduate student Kaylee Deleva and Lee for the most points on the team with 23 so far this season. They are also tied in points for second place in the NE10.

The Panthers' next game will be on the road as they travel to Rindge, NH this Saturday (Nov. 5) and will play Franklin Pierce University at 11:00 a.m.
