Trio Posts Season-Highs in Volleyball's 3-1 Win at New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - Behind a season-high 15 kills from Noelle Alberda and 19 digs from Jaydin Nowak, the Adelphi University volleyball team won its 11th consecutive contest on Tuesday, defeating the University of New Haven 3-1.

Samantha Meehan was the other Panther to reach double-digit kills with 11 as Lilyen McCarthy recorded eight with no hitting errors in the victory. Four other individuals reached 10 or more digs with Jamie Yonker and Macarty McQueen accounting for 15 and 14, respectively.

Senior Brenna Valsted also put together a career performance, accounting for 48 while adding 11 digs to boot.

Adelphi (17-8, 8-1) entered the contest winning 20 straight sets and added another two after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the match inside Charger Gymnasium. The Panther offense used 19 kills and a .424 team hitting percentage to roll to 25-12 opening set victory while the home team only managed eight kills.

The Panthers were down early in the third, at 7-3 but used a 6-1 run to make it even at 10-all. With momentum up for grabs, the Chargers stormed back with 7-2 stretch of their own to regain the lead. Trailing by four, Samantha Collins notched a kill that sparked a run of five unanswered - which included two McQueen service aces - to even the third set at 23-23. A timely kill for the home team coupled with a ball handling error on the Adelphi side broke the set streak for the visitors, resulting in a fourth frame.

A solo block from McCarthy brought the score to 6-6 in the fourth set, and sent the Brown and Gold on a 6-0 run to command the advantage. Putting the Chargers in a deficit, the home team was unable to overcome that position for the remainder of the contest, getting as close as two, but held off by Adelphi. The teams traded sideouts for the final 10 points, as Meehan and Alberda delivered a one-two punch to close out the set and match.

The volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 28 when they welcome Franklin Pierce to the Center for Recreation and Sports for a 7:00 p.m. first serve. The first 25 students in attendance will receive a free Jersey Mike's sub card.
