Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - It was an outstanding performance by junior goalie Amanda Montiel that helped the Adelphi University field hockey team pull through in overtime to capture a 2-1 decision against Mercy College on Tuesday.
The Mavericks (4-5, 3-5 NE10) collected 10 shots on goal in the first period - which resulted in ten saves from Montiel, who held Mercy from scoring.
As the second quarter began, junior Kylie Peregoy slashed one into the back of the cage off a penalty corner setup that was assisted by senior Giana McKeough to give the Panthers (7-6, 5-2 NE10) the first half lead. Before the end of the second quarter, graduate student Michaela Zabicki was given a yellow card for a foul near the inside of the Mavericks offensive circle, however the visitors went into the break with a lead.
The Cats also had a total of seven penalty corners to Mercy's three in the opening half.
The Mavericks tied up the game in the third quarter off another penalty corner setup that was scored by Ally Schrek and assisted from Kate Ringstad.Â
At the end of regulation, the teams were in a stalemate at one-all. It only took the Brown and Gold just over three minutes to secure the game victory off a rebound goal from graduate student Kaylee Deleva that was assisted by sophomore Amanda Lee.Â
Montiel tallied 15 saves over the course of the game - breaking her previous career high of 12 which she set against West Chester in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Adelphi looks to continue their win streak when they go up against Molloy University on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a rescheduled contest.
