Volleyball Shakes Things Up at Saint Anselm with 3-0 Sweep

Manchester, NH - With an impressive stretch on the line, the Adelphi volleyball team proved to be the real deal after taking a three-set thriller from Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon, marking the team's ninth sweep in its last 10 outings.

Saint Anselm (18-7, 7-2 NE10) was coming off a huge upset of American International from Friday night, as the Hawks took a four-set win from the Yellow Jackets to hand them just their second loss of the 2022 campaign.

Lilyen McCarthy led all players on the floor in kills on Saturday, producing 12 alongside a strong day defensively at the net. Overall, the Panthers held an 11-6 edge in blocks over the hosts despite coming up with one less service ace.

Down three for a better part of the first set, Adelphi strung together some points and used a solo block from Samantha Collins to make it 11-all. Macarty McQueen sparked a four-point stretch that gave the Panthers a little momentum, however the home team stormed back with four unanswered to regain the lead. Service errors from both sides put the visitors up one and a stop from Noelle Alberda and a hitting miscue from the home team made way for a 25-22 first set victory for Adelphi.

Roles reversed in the second as the visiting team from Long Island held small advantage in the early going, but put together a 5-1 run to lead 19-12. It was all Adelphi from then on, as Saint Anselm couldn't overcome the deficit and the Brown and Gold moved to 2-0 in the contest.

Continuing to ride the wave, the Panthers led by at-most seven in the third, but the home team tallied five straight en route to leading 20-19. But even when trailing down the stretch in the third frame, the Panthers (16-8, 7-1 NE10) stayed cool under pressure and used kills from three different players to secure the 25-23 victory along with the match.

Head Coach Danielle Macknight and the Panther squad head to West Haven on Tuesday, Oct. 25 to take on New Haven in regular season action. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
