Garden City, N.Y - The Adelphi University field hockey team celebrated their senior day on Saturday morning with a shutout victory over conference opponent Saint Michael's College by a final score of 5-0.
It was the Brown and Gold's second consecutive shutout and their fourth this season. The team totaled a season high, 40 shots and 31 penalty corners throughout the contest.
The scoring happened quickly as sophomore
Amanda Lee slapped one into the back of the cage on a shot that was inside the half circle that split between the defenders, giving the Panthers the early lead. Throughout the period, the Panthers collected 11 penalty corners while attempting 10 different shots - coming from five different players.
The Purple Knights (3-8, 3-4 NE10) got their first shot on goal in the midway point of the second quarter from Danielle Cummings but was saved by junior goalie
Amanda Montiel. Less than a minute later, the Brown and Gold (6-6, 5-2 NE10) tallied another goal that came from a penalty corner that was scored by graduate student
Kaylee Deleva and assisted by redshirt freshman
Emiline Biggin to extend the home team lead.
As the first half ended, Adelphi had a total of 18 shots and penalty corners.
In the beginning of the second half, Panthers' redshirt freshman
Candice Wainschel collected her first collegiate goal off a penalty corner that came on an insert from graduate student
Bianca Bachisin.
The Brown and Gold scored two more times in the fourth period courtesy of penalty corners. Freshman
Lotte de Jong would score her first goal as a Panther and graduate student
Michaela Zabicki would rattle one into the back of the cage off an assist by senior
Giana McKeough.
Saint Michael's goalie Riley O'Connor notched a season high 22 saves.
Adelphi will now be on the road for the next week as they first travel to play another conference opponent, Mercy College at 3:30 p.m..
