Manchester, N.H. - After pulling out the upset last year, the No. 5 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team looked to erupt against Goliath in the NE10 Tournament once again on Friday.
The shot at another Cinderella run fell short this time in a 4-3 loss to top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University in a semifinal round contest.
Adelphi, which will play non-conference matches in the spring to build up a potential NCAA Tournament resume, now concludes the fall at 8-5 overall.
Although a 6-0 win at top doubles by
Sanne Selmer Gilje and
Barbie Quagliardi got Adelphi out to a roaring hot start, SNHUÂ still took two of the three matches to claim the team doubles point.
Despite trailing 2-0, the Panthers sparked a comeback
Julia Kielan and
Katarina Liedbeck each won in straight sets, while Selmer Gilje steered Adelphi in front with a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 decision over NE10 Player of the Year Magdalena Hubickova.
With the final result still in limbo, the No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches decided a victor.
Both matches went the distance. While Quagliardi and
Amanda Franstedt took the opening set off their opponents, SNHU's Alina Kupfer broke a key serve against Quagliardi in the third set that eventually secured match point for the Penmen.
The spring season commences for the Adelphi women's tennis team on Sunday, Mar. 5 at home against Daemen University.
