West Haven, Conn. - The No. 5 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team got a key piece of its line-up back just in time for the start of the NE10 Championship.
With the return of
Barbie Quagliardi, the Panthers knocked off No. 4 seed University of New Haven, 4-1, in a first-round contest Wednesday at the UNH Tennis Courts.
Adelphi now moves onto the semifinal round, where it will look to take down the top seed for a second-straight year. This time, the Panthers are going head-to-head with Southern New Hampshire University.
Last fall, the Brown and Gold -- as a No. 4 seed -- shocked top-seeded Le Moyne College on the road, to the tune of a 4-0 result.
Quagliardi played a key role right away, teaming up with
Sanne Selmer Gilje for the 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles that clinched the team point.
Despite falling 6-0, 6-3 in singles, the rest of her team picked up the one-time NE10 Player of the Year in 2019.
Caterina Federici first won by identical 6-2 scorelines at No. 4 singles.
Julia Kielan was the next to finish and although she lost 6-4 in her first set, the senior rebounded to win 6-0, 6-0 in her next two sets.
In a spot to end the match,
Katarina Liedbeck -- in her first postseason action -- dealt UNH's Gaayatri Shankar a 6-0, 7-5 defeat to put a lid on the contest.
Adelphi will travel to Southern New Hampshire on Friday (Oct. 21) for its NE10 Tournament semifinal match. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
