Garden City, N.Y. - With a season-low six errors, the Adelphi University volleyball team put together an impressive 3-0 win over Southern Connecticut Tuesday night, to push its win streak to six.
Leading all players was middle blocker
Lilyen McCarthy, who raked in 13 kills to go with three solo blocks. As a team, the Panthers (12-8, 4-1 NE10) put up an astonishing 10-1 mark in blocks, while also producing eight blocks to the Owls' two.
The teams were evenly matched in the early going of the opening set, with Southern Connecticut (13-10, 2-4 NE10) even taking the lead at 14-13. A miscue from Kacey Deecher made way for Adelphi to rattle off the next three points, ultimately taking a lead that would not be relinquished. McCarthy put up a big stop at the net to conclude the first set at 25-20.
With
Brenna Valsted on the serving line, the Brown and Gold started off the second set on a 6-0 tear, even pushing that distance even farther when they made it 16-2 on another block from McCarthy. In that stretch, first year
Macarty McQueen found the floor in four straight attempts, to lead all players in service aces in the win. The Owls were unable to overcome a deficit that great, as
Samantha Collins and
Noelle Alberda each recorded a kill in the final three-point swing to keep their opponents in single digits with a 25-9 victory.
In its best set of the game, the Panthers lodged 14 kills with just two errors on 27 attempts to hit .444 as a group, while holding Southern Connecticut to a negative percentage. The Owls were leading 5-3 until a kill from
Katie Schloss set
Jaydin Nowak to the line for the next five points as the home team took a 10-5 lead. Trailing again, the Owls were unable to put together any offense of substance as two four-point stretches for Adelphi closed the door on the NE10 matchup.
Adelphi will be back on its home court this Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host Assumption University at 1:00 p.m. The first 50 fans will receive a pair of branded thundersticks to make some noise inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
