Rome, Ga. - Adelphi University tennis freshman sensation
Sanne Selmer Gilje spent this weekend in Rome, Ga. amongst the nation's top Division II competition at the 2022 ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center.
After staking claim to the 2022 ITA East Region Women's Singles title, Selmer Gilje qualified for the ITA's nationwide Division II tournament.
"This was a great experience and tournament for Sanne to be a part of. She competed against high-quality opponents from the top Division II schools in the country, and fought very well," said Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas.
Across her three matches, Selmer Gilje faced opponents who finished in the Top 5 of their respective ITA regional rankings in 2021-22.
Her first contest pitted the freshman against the top seed of the East draw -- Barry College's Denis Khazan. She went toe-to-toe with the South Region's No. 1 player and lost 6-0, 6-1.
The next day, Selmer Gilje moved into the West draw for the consolation matches and prevailed against UIndy's Lea Cakarevic after losing the first set, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
On Saturday, the Stabekk, Norway native concluded play at the ITA Cup with a 6-3, 4-6, 0-6 loss to Hawaii Pacific's Maureen Tilgner.
Upon Sanne's return from Georgia, the Panthers will start preparing for the NE10 Tournament, which is set to commence with first-round play on Wednesday (Oct. 19).
"It was a great opportunity to showcase her talent, and now we look forward to building upon this for the conference playoffs later this week," Fakas concluded.
