Worcester, Mass. - On Tuesday afternoon, the Adelphi University field hockey team faced off against reigning Northeast-10 conference champion no. 7 Assumption and lost a tough battle by the score of 2-1.
At the start of the game, the Greyhounds (8-2, 5-0 NE10) took advantage of the attack. Posting seven shots on target in which six of them were saved by freshman goalie
Mirthe Karstens.
That one shot came by Mia Salah at the 12:38 mark who scored the lone goal of the period on a rebound shot that was assisted by Sydney Bouchard to give the Greyhounds the early edge.
Once the second quarter began, the Brown and Gold looked for ways to tie the game. Sophomore
Amanda Lee had an opportunity early on but was denied by Assumption's goalie Kylie Gargiulo on a near post shot. In the later parts of the quarter, Adelphi (4-5, 3-1 NE10) created another chance from a penalty corner setup and senior
Morgan Minicozzi took the shot but couldn't get it into the cage.Â
Karstens ended the first half notching eight saves for the Brown and Gold.Â
The Greyhounds accumulated another goal by a shot that trickled into the cage from Christina Leonard and was assisted by Chloe Kaeller to extend their lead in the third period.Â
Entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers were outshot 15-6 but weren't backing down from the no. 7 ranked team in the country. At the 55:40 mark, Adelphi would score its first goal of the game from a close by shot from graduate student
Kaylee Deleva that was assisted by Lee to cut the deficit by one. Not even a minute later, the Panthers were given a penalty stroke and graduate student
Michaela Zabicki took the opportunity to tie the game but was unable to from a save by Gargiulo.
The Brown and Gold had four penalty corner chances in the last period, totaling seven for the game and tying Assumption as well.
The Panthers' next game will be on the road to play Bentley University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another NE10 conference battle.
