Worcester, Mass. - The No. 20 Adelphi University men's soccer team appeared to have a road result in hand, but concluded ninety minutes of play at Assumption University in a 1-1 draw Saturday at Multi-Sport Stadium.
Victor Castel, who had gone six games without a goal, ended that streak with his scoreless tiebreaker in the 48th minute.
Nearly three minutes into the second half, Castel drilled a shot from 20 yards out into the left corner netting for his first goal since Aug. 31.
Although Assumption had a player sent off with 10:41 to go, the Greyhounds still flirted with that tying goal.
In the 75th minute,
Daniel De La Heras denied a header at the far post with a diving save. But, in the 79th, the hosts broke through, when Assumption's Axel Gerremo put a 40-yard strike, with De La Heras off his line, under the crossbar.
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca twice tried to stir up a late goal in the final minutes, but Assumption keeper Francisco Teixeira was up to the task both times.
De La Heras set a new career-high with seven saves in the effort for the Panthers, who moved to 5-1-4 overall and 2-1-2 in NE10 competition.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad are back at it next Saturday (Oct. 8), with a 12 p.m. kickoff at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.
