Manchester, NH - On Saturday afternoon, the Adelphi University field hockey team pulled off an upset over no. 6 ranked Saint Anselm in overtime by a final score of 1-0. This is the Panthers' first road win over the Hawks since November 2014.
The Panthers had an opportunity within the first 5 minutes of the match with a penalty stroke - junior Kylie Pereogy hit the shot wide of the cage to stay scoreless.
At the end of the first period, Saint Anselm (2-4, 1-1 NE10) created six penalty corner chances but were denied on the score sheet thanks to a defensive stand on the Adelphi side.Â
Freshman
Mirthe Karstens collected seven out of her ten saves in the first quarter.
The Northeast-10 teams were scoreless in the first half - the Hawks outscored the Panthers on shots 12-1 and 9-3 on penalty corners.
In the second half, Saint Anselm went right back on the attack, which lead to another penalty corner chance. Forward Maggie Malloy went for the shot but it was saved by Peregoy to keep the game tied at zero.
Sophomore
Amanda Lee went for one final scoring opportunity late in the fourth period but the shot went just wide of the cage, leading the matchup to go into overtime.Â
Just as Adelphi did in their first game of the season at home against New Haven, they took no time to create scoring chances once overtime began.Â
At the 64:33 mark, graduate student
Kaylee Deleva scored from an assist by Lee to seal the victory for the Panthers (3-4, 2-0 NE10).Â
Adelphi will travel back to New York to take on Molloy University on Wednesday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m.
