Garden City, N.Y. - A total of 25 offensive rebounds overwhelmed the Owls in a 75-70 win for the Adelphi University women's basketball team against Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation for Sport.
It was the first game following the holiday break for the Panthers, who improved to 4-6 and 2-3 in NE10 play.
Adelphi had four players finish in double figures, led by
Emily Miccile's 18-point night.
Sarah Deyo posted her first double-double of the season, pitching in 10 points and 12 boards.
The Panthers exploded for a season-best 23-point first quarter, with Miccile and
Emma Cuccurullo pitching in seven and six apiece.
Adelphi built as much as a 15-point lead with 8:39 left in the second quarter, before a double-digit run for the visiting Owls (6-5, 3-2 NE10) pulled the score within four at 29-25. A Cuccurullo jumper halted the 11-0 SCSU spurt.
The home team snagged a season-high 25 offensive boards. Seven of those came in the third quarter, along with eight unanswered points and six forced turnovers to decide the game.
Kaitlyn O'Connell added a trio of consecutive three-point baskets to cap off Adelphi's third-quarter performance.
Although Southern Connecticut went up by a basket late in the fourth, Miccile helped her team hold off the visitors with a 4-for-4 performance at the line down the stretch.
The Panthers will return to action Tuesday (Jan. 11), when they meet Stonehill College in an NE10 showdown in Easton, Mass. at 5:30 p.m.
