Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Miccile Scores 1,000 Career Points; Women's Hoops Outlasts Franklin Pierce, 68-67

Garden City, N.Y. - Needing just above her average points per game this season to reach a milestone, graduate student Emily Miccile finished with 20 en route to scoring her 1,000th career point on Saturday, helping Adelphi women's basketball to a 68-67 win over Franklin Pierce University.

The win earns the Panthers their fourth straight to stand at an even 8-8 overall while bringing them one game above .500 in conference play at 6-5.

Adelphi led 20-12 after one quarter of play, a lead they would not relinquish til much later in the contest. Ty Hawkins and Miccile registered back-to-back buckets in the second to increase the host advantage to double-figures, but a late three from the Ravens (6-6, 2-4 NE10) cut their deficit to five heading into the locker room.

The Ravens threatened to take over the lead in the early going of the third quarter, opening with a three-point basket from Lisa Sulejmani that cut the Adelphi lead to one, however Emma Cuccurullo and Miccile teamed up to keep their opponents at bay. A 10-4 run in favor of Franklin Pierce gave them a brief edge over the Panthers, but the hosts closed out the frame with a 10-0 run to lead by nine with one quarter left in regulation.

Korina Guerra capitalized on a Raven turnover to make it a 13-point advantage, but the visitors scored the next eight unanswered to come within five.

Miccile drove to the basket at 6:37 and in the process earned the chance to make it a three-point play - her free throw landed perfectly, making her the newest member of the 1,000-point club for the women's basketball program.

With under two minutes to play, Franklin Pierce drained a three-pointer to once again take control of the contest, but a Hawkins driving layup sealed the deal - for the second game this week - as the visiting team ultimately could not produce anything to extend the game despite possession with five seconds remaining.

Hawkins went 7-for-13 from the field finishing with 16 points as Sarah Deyon produced 5-of-7 shooting to contribute 11 with 13 rebounds for her second double-double this season.

Adelphi hits the road for their next two games, starting with Saint Michael's College on Jan. 25. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
