West Haven, Conn. - A
Ty'zhea Hawkins pull-up jumper from the foul line with 5.3 seconds remaining sent the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a thrilling 59-58 win over University of New Haven in NE10 action at Charger Gymnasium on Monday afternoon.
The contest was a make-up of a previously-postponed game on New Year's Day, in light of COVID-19 protocols.
Emily Miccile was first fouled on a drive to the basket in the final seconds that set the Panthers up with a baseline out of bounds.
On the re-start,
Kaitlyn O'Connell inbounded the ball to Hawkins, who took three dribbles before pulling up from the line for the game-winning shot that got a friendly bounce off the front of the iron.
As the last few ticks ran off the clock, UNH's Briana Van Cleaf put up a floater from the elbow that was swatted away by Miccile.
Adelphi (6-8, 4-5 NE10) led 21-18 after one quarter of play and the difference soon ballooned to double digits, following a 10-2 run that started the second quarter.
O'Connell and Miccile opened the quarter with buckets on back-to-back possessions. A put-back lay-up from
Rebecca Lee expanded the Adelphi lead to 31-20 with 3:43 left.
A Miccile three only 1:11 into the third quarter had the Panthers sporting their largest lead of the game at 42-27.
After that basket, New Haven (5-8, 0-7 NE10) proceeded to outscore Adelphi 28-9 over the next 11 minutes that rallied the Chargers in front, 55-51.
A pair of consecutive three-pointers from
Korina Guerra and Miccile surged the Panthers back in the lead in the fourth and eventually set up Hawkins' winning heroics.
Miccile finished 5-of-11 shooting from the field and had a game-high-tying 15 points.
Emma Cuccurullo and Lee scored 10 points apiece. Lee also pulled down 12 rebounds for her first double-double as a Panther.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad have a quick turnaround, as they travel Wednesday (Jan. 19) to Worcester, Mass. for a 5:30 p.m. contest at Assumption University.
