Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Hoops Win Streak Snapped by Saint Anselm, 74-65

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite another 30-point effort from Ronnie Silva, the Adelphi University men's basketball team could not hold on for the win on Saturday, dropping a 74-65 decision to Saint Anselm Hawks inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.

The Panthers (10-5, 5-3 NE10) found themselves even with the Hawks (8-4, 4-3 NE10) with under 10 minutes left in regulation, but experienced a scoring drought that left them trailing by 10, unable to make up the difference.

Silva led all players with 34 points, with the help of eight three-pointers as Chris Coalmon and Adonis Williams accounted for 12 and 11, respectively. Saint Anselm saw three players finish with just under 20 points apiece, most notably leading scorer Chris Paul, who needed 18 points to move into 12th place on the all-time scoring list for Saint Anselm, ultimately concluding the contest with 19.

Adelphi's lead never exceeded double-digits and was its largest at six at 12:13 in the opening half. The visiting team managed to close out the frame on an 11-5 run, giving them a six point advantage heading into the locker room.

With two buckets from Silva and a second chance layup in the paint for Williams, the teams were locked at 33-all in the early going of the second with neither team leading by more than three over the ensuing eight minutes.

Gustav Suhr-Jessen's driving layup at 8:05 started a streak of 10 unanswered points for the Hawks, a deficit too large for Adelphi to overcome in the end. Silva nailed his second consecutive three-pointer from deep in the corner at 1:08 to make it a seven-point contest, but the visitors made 6-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the win.

The Panthers will play a rescheduled contest with the University of New Haven on Monday, Jan. 17 at 3:00 p.m. inside Charger Gymnasium.
