Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - On Wednesday, the Adelphi University men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Mercy College in an afternoon non-conference showdown at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry.
The loss closes out the season-opening three-game road trip for the Panthers at 0-2-1.
Although Adelphi lit up the scoreboard for the game's opening goal for the third time in as many contests, the Panthers conceded three unanswered goals in the final 34:48.
The tying and game-winning goals for the Mavericks (2-0) came only 1:47 apart.
The visitors' lone goal came on the effort of
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca, who scored his second goal in three games.
Starting from inside its own half, Adelphi pushed the pace and compelled the opposing keeper to come off his line, which led to a Descalzo finish off a
Benji Jones rebound in the 50th minute.
The Panthers mustered the only shot of the first half, but were outshot by Mercy, 11-6, in the latter period.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad next meet West Chester University in their 2021 home opener this Saturday (Sept. 11) at Motamed Field at 7 p.m.
