Oceanside, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team opened up the 2021-22 season in prevailing fashion, defeating Jefferson University, 5-2, in non-conference action at the Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside.
For the 14th-consecutive year, the Panthers (1-0) won their season-opening contest. The streak dates back to the 2008-09 campaign.
Although the No. 2 doubles team of
Amanda Franstedt and
Louisa Junghanns fell 6-4 in their match, the top- and third-doubles pairs won comfortably to secure the doubles point for Adelphi.
Barbie Quagliardi and
Caterina Federici earned a 6-2 victory in top doubles, while
Julia Kielan and
Carolina Chaves breezed to a 6-1 result at third doubles.
Following a short break, the Panthers won the first three completed singles contests to put the match away.
Quagliardi (6-2, 7-5), Franstedt (6-1, 7-5) and Federici (6-1, 6-4) all prevailed in straight sets at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 flights, respectively.
As the match was no longer in doubt, Chaves and Kielan both played eight-game pro sets. Kielan extended her No. 6 singles winning streak from last year to eight consecutive matches with an 8-1 victory.
With Wednesday's match at USciences canceled, Adelphi returns to action next Saturday (Sept. 11), when they battle Stonehill College in its 2021 NE10 opener in Easton, Mass. Last spring, the Skyhawks ended Adelphi's season in the semifinals of the NE10 Tournament.
