Easton, Mass. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team opened up the conference portion of its 2021-22 schedule with a stunning 7-0 shutout of reigning NE10 Tournament runner-up Stonehill College in Easton.
It was an early re-match of the NE10 Tournament semifinals last spring, when Stonehill defeated Adelphi, 4-0.
The 7-0 result marks the first time ever -- as members of the NE10 -- that the Panthers (2-0, 1-0 NE10) did not surrender a match to the Skyhawks (1-1, 1-1 NE10), who have won two of the last three NE10 Tournament titles.
Although
Barbie Quagliardi lost her first doubles match in nearly two years (won 12 straight), it didn't factor towards who captured the doubles point.
The respective No. 2 and No. 3 pairs of
Louisa Junghanns and
Amanda Franstedt, and
Julia Kielan and
Carolina Chaves won via 6-3 and 6-4 scorelines, respectively.
Adelphi then swept the board in singles. Five of the six matches finished in straight sets.
Junghanns played a tough first set at the No. 1 flight and won in a tiebreaker. She carried that effort toward a 6-2 victory in the second.Â
Quagliardi was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at second singles. Franstedt prevailed 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth spot. Kielan continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-1 result at No. 5, while Chaves came out on top, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers are right back at it tomorrow (Sept. 12) with a quick turnaround, as they meet Bentley at 9 a.m. at Brandeis University in Waltham.
