Garden City, N.Y. - Has anyone found themselves in a better position than
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca of late?
Descalzo picked up his third-consecutive game-winner Tuesday night in helping the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against NE10 rival Southern Connecticut State University at Motamed Field.
It is also Descalzo's second overtime clincher in three games, after netting the golden goal last Wednesday in a 3-2 double-overtime victory at New Haven.
Descalzo cleaned up a rebound off a first-time volley from
Paolo Marciano in the 97th minute that SCSU keeper Bailey Bassett got his right hand on with a sprawling save, leaving an open net for Descalzo.
Adelphi nearly opened the scoring 15 minutes in, when an outstanding
Daniel De La Heras save led to a 2-v-1 opportunity that resulted in a Marciano shot that sailed wide of the frame on the counter.
While De La Heras had just robbed the Owls of a goal, SCSU didn't miss on its next opportunity.
An Alex da Cunha through ball led to a 1-v-1 for Juan Alava, who snuck a left-footed shot underneath De La Heras for the game's first score.
Although
Francisco Greco and Descalzo were on the doorstep of tying it in the final minutes of the first half, the Owls took a 1-0 lead into the break.
While the opportunities were aplenty early on in the second half, the Panthers finally got their break in the 65th minute, when
Franco Paz was taken down just inside the 18-yard box by Jonathan Foster.
Marciano then stepped to the spot and planted the equalizer inside the left post, making it a 1-1 game.
De La Heras recorded his third win in as many games in the decision. He stopped five shots, while Bassett made seven saves.
Before returning home again, Adelphi will square off with Saint Michael's College in an NE10 tilt this Saturday (Oct. 2) at noon in Colchester, Vt.
