Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team fell to No. 3 Assumption University in its first home conference contest of the season on Tuesday, 2-1.
The Greyhounds (7-1, 4-0 NE10) got an early jump on the Panthers (3-3, 1-2 NE10), scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game. Deirdre Burchill, who is now tied for first on the team with six goals, got the visitors on the board after 1:05 of action just to be followed with a Sydney Bouchard tally just over a minute later.
Trailing 2-0, the Brown and Gold responded in the 48th minute after two quarters of scoreless play. Junior
Danielle Kempf crossed a ball that turned into a battle in front of the cage, which
Kelsey Catalano managed to tap in, to cut the deficit to one.
The home team managed 13 shots in the game, with six coming in the fourth quarter alone. The Panthers continued to press on the Greyhound defense in the final minutes, but were not able to put another one past Assumption keeper Kylie Gargiulo.
Adelphi looks to bounce back this Saturday, Oct. 2 against Bentley on Motamed Field. Game time is set for noon.
