Women's Tennis Drops First Match at SNHU, 5-2

Manchester, N.H. - Coming out of the ITA break, the Adelphi University women's tennis team resumed conference play on Saturday by traveling up to Manchester for a date with Southern New Hampshire University.

The Panthers (4-1, 3-1 NE10) came out on the short end of a 5-2 loss to SNHU (3-0, 3-0 NE10) and suffered its first defeat of the 2021-22 season in the process.

A tiebreaker decided the opening point of the match. In a tightly-contested affair at No. 1 doubles, SNHU's Natalie Kallmunzerova and Magdalena Hubickova squeezed out a 7-5 win against Barbie Quagliardi and Caterina Federici in the tiebreak to stake the Penmen to the early lead.

That momentum carried over to singles, where SNHU prevailed in each of the first four flights -- three of which came in straight sets.

Julia Kielan slashed the difference to 3-1 in the match with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set result over Elizabeth Dwyer in fifth singles.

Despite surrendering the first set, Carolina Chaves rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 6 slot.

Quagliardi played Hubickova, the reigning NE10 Player of the Year, to a three-setter at second singles. Quagliardi took the first set, 7-5, but dropped the ensuing pair, 6-2 and 10-7.

Head Coach Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad will now have a week off before squaring off with NE10 rival Le Moyne College next Saturday (Oct. 2) at noon in Syracuse, N.Y.
