West Haven, Conn. - With four minutes left in double overtime,
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca potted the game-winner Wednesday night to send the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 win at University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
Despite allowing two late UNH (3-2, 0-2 NE10) goals that forced extra time, Descalzo's timely heroics led Adelphi (2-3-1, 1-1 NE10) to its first conference win of the season.
Off a throw-in deep in the attacking third,
Francisco Greco delivered a left-footed cross into the center of the area, which Descalzo headed into the lower right corner of the net for the game-winner.
The Panthers were outshot 12-4 in regulation, but the scoreboard indicated otherwise for the first 80 minutes.
In the 68th minute,
Paolo Marciano broke the scoreless tie, when Adelphi forced a giveaway on an outstanding tackle by
Tommy Speed.
Although
Franco Paz was denied at the goalline by UNH keeper Themis Kastoris, Marciano followed it up by finishing into the top shelf.
Six minutes later, Adelphi won a key ball in the air that was played onto Marciano, who fed
Aidan Keenan for a tap-in that doubled the visitors' lead with 16:09 remaining.
Daniel De La Heras made his first start in the Adelphi net in 2021 and stopped five shots. It was the junior's first start since Oct. 19, 2019 at Millersville.
