No. 8 Field Hockey Wins Season Opener at New Haven, 2-1

New Haven, Conn. - In its first outing of 2021, the No. 8 Adelphi University field hockey team claimed a season-opening victory at the University of New Haven, 2-1, on Thursday.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Chargers (0-1) broke the silence just under two minutes into the second frame, netting the first goal after seven unsuccessful shot attempts.

The Brown and Gold came back from the one-goal deficit after the break, following the efforts of junior Giana McKeough.

McKeough put one on the stick of senior forward Kaylee Deleva, who knocked in the tying goal in the 44th minute of play. Just ten minutes later, the junior took matters into her own hands and recorded the go-ahead point.

The Panthers (1-0) outshot the Chargers 12-11 on the game, with nine coming in the second half alone.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Montiel made her career debut in the cage for Adelphi, tallying two saves in her first game.

The Panthers open up on their home field on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against St. Thomas Aquinas College.
