Waterbury, Conn. - In its first game in 649 days, the No. 15 Adelphi University men's soccer team drew to a 2-2 tie with Post University in its 2021 season opener Thursday at LaMoy Field.
The contest was a long-awaited re-match of their 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament second-round showdown, in which Post prevailed at Motamed Field, 1-0.
It also marked Adelphi's first game since that fateful day, as a result of the 2020 season being canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The reigning NE10 Player of the Year picked up from where he left off only 7:29 into the match.
Senior forward
Paolo Marciano got behind the Post defense on a cross-field ball from
Benji Jones and beat the keeper for the early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers (0-0-1) would double their lead just before the half, afterÂ
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca tapped in an
Ofek Pinto cross with 9:56 left.
Adelphi took a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The two teams combined for four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, with three of them cashing in.
The visitors couldn't stave off the Eagles (0-0-1) though. On Post's first shot of the second half, Alvaro Sanchez converted on a 2-on-1 opportunity for the equalizer.
Neither team then registered a shot on goal for the remainder of regulation and the game headed into overtime.
While the Panthers outshot the Eagles, 4-0, between the two overtimes, the match finished in an even draw.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad are back at it Sunday (Sept. 5) against WIlmington University at 3 p.m. in WIlmington, Del.
