Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a brilliant second-half performance from
Sarah Hofmeier, the Adelphi University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 overtime result to Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action Saturday at Motamed Field.
As a celebration of Pride awareness and the United Soccer Coaches' "Play for Pride" initiative, the team donned rainbow-colored laces on their cleats during the match.
A corner late in the overtime period ultimately doomed the Panthers, who fell to 1-2-1 overall and 1-2 in NE10 play.
In the 95th minute, Saint Anselm earned a corner kick on the far side of the pitch. Olivia Gotobed inswung a ball towards the center of the box, where Delaney Glode got a head on it and put it out of the reach of Hofmeier inside the right post.
Hofmeier, who relieved starter
Krista Aliscio after coming off with an injury in the 22nd minute, kept the Hawks off the board in regulation though with a couple of outstanding saves.
She made diving stops to her left and right on Gotobed early in the second half and finished the afternoon with a game-high five saves.
Ellen McAuliff was on the doorstep of breaking the tie in the 58th minute, but Kate Macaluso got enough of her right hand on it to keep it out of the net.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers next face Bentley University in an NE10 showdown Tuesday (Sept. 21) at 3:30 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
