Softball Headed to NE10 Championship

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team won the NE10 Southwest Division final Sunday over University of New Haven with a sweep of a doubleheader; 3-2 and 2-1 at Janet L. Ficke Field.

For the second year in a row, the Panthers will meet Saint Anselm College, the Northeast Division finalist, for the NE10 Championship next weekend (May 14-15) in Manchester, N.H.

Game 1: Adelphi 3, New Haven 2
In a classic pitcher's duel, New Haven was first on the board in the fourth, after Ava Fitzmaurice provided a spark with a lead-off single up the middle. She then made her way around the bases, and scored on an Adelphi fielding error.

Adelphi answered with two runs in its half of the fourth, that were scored on Angela Lignelli's single through the right side.

The Panthers did not hold that lead very long. Fitzmaurice once again came around to score the tying run on a triple off the bat of Nahtali Simpson.

Adelphi had a breakout seventh inning that dictated the outcome of the game. Kendall Winn drilled a double to left-center, Hannah Pineda walked and Amanda Owens reached on a throwing error to load the bases for Emily Whitman. With a 1-2 count, Whitman went the opposite way for a game-winning hit to right field.

Ally Muller claimed her 17th win inside the circle and matched a career-best 13 strikeouts. She struck out six consecutive batters between the second and third innings.

Game 2: Adelphi 2, New Haven 1
Adelphi converted two New Haven errors into two runs to start the game - that pair proved enough to secure the win.

Whitman singled and advanced to second on a fielding error and Lauren O'Neill reached on a throwing error after her sacrifice bunt that scored Whitman. O'Neill later scored on Faith Camilleri's double up the middle. Adelphi did not produce another hit until the fourth inning.

New Haven left two runners on base, before they plated one in the sixth. on Mya Case's homer to left. That cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

The Chargers put one more on base that inning, and it was the last runner for the remainder of the game.

Lindsey Hibbs claimed her first-ever win in Game 2 with four strikeouts, before Claire Fon came in for the save. Fon inherited two runners in the sixth and avoided any damage and retired the side in order for the seventh, including a pair of strikeouts, to close it out.
