Softball Falls in NE10 Championship to Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. - For the second time in as many seasons, the Adelphi University softball team fell short in the Northeast-10 Conference championship series to Saint Anselm, 7-3 and 2-1.

Emily Whitman and Claire Fon were named to the All-Championship team for their outstanding performances, and Ally Muller received the Elite 24 Award for having the highest cumulative GPA of all participating student-athletes.

Game 1: Adelphi 3, Saint Anselm 7
Emily Whitman started the game off with a solo shot to left center that gave the Panthers its first and only lead of the game. Whitman homered again in the third that added to her 3-for-4 offensive performance.

Saint Anselm wasted no time getting on the board after Adelphi. Bre Klaiber blasted a two run shot that put the Hawks up 2-1. The next inning, Saint Anselm had five hits and five runs to extend the lead 7-1.

Adelphi pushed one run across in the fourth, but it was not enough. This was the last run scored for either team for the remainder of the first contest.

Ally Muller took the loss from inside the circle and is now 17-3. Claire Fon came in for four scoreless innings of relief for the Panthers, only allowing two hits.

Game 2: Adelphi 1, Saint Anselm 2
The first three innings of the second game were a battle of Adelphi's and Saint Anselm's defenses, with only one hit between the two teams.

Klaiber broke open the scoring for the Hawks again - this time with a solo shot to left field. Saint Anselm held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth. Faith Camilleri drilled a RBI double to the fence that scored Whitman who reached on an infield error.

The game was tied heading into the last inning of play, until Saint Anselm converted an Adelphi error into a run on the board. The Panthers fell short in a seventh-inning comeback attempt.

Lindsay Hibbs started the game and took the loss inside the circle. She threw four innings with four strikeouts and four hits. Fon once again entered the circle in for the last two innings and did not give up a hit.

Adelphi will return to Manchester, N.H. next week to compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament. The selection show is Sunday (May 16) at 10 p.m.
