Manchester, N.H. -
Ally Muller threw her 500th career strikeout during the second inning of Adelphi softball's 3-2 victory over Bridgeport in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional on Wednesday afternoon, back on the campus of Saint Anselm. Muller's 500 strikeouts pushes her to fourth all time in the Adelphi softball record book.
Hannah Pineda opened up the scoring for the Panthers (28-8) with a second inning homer over the left field fence. This went on to be the only run the Panthers scored until the fifth inning when
Sophia Cicchetti poked a fly ball to right field that resulted in two bases and one run scored. Two batters later, Pineda walked, pushing another runner across for the Panthers.
Pineda went a team-best 2-for-2 with a home run and outfield single. Teammate
Lauren O'Neill also added two hits in her 2-for-4 performance.
Bridgeport was able put a pair of runs on the board during the third inning due in part to Samantha Ferreri who sent a double to the fence. This gave the Purple Knights a 2-1 lead that remained until Cicchetti's double in the fifth.
Muller started in the circle and threw four innings with four strikeouts.
Claire Fon came in for the three remaining innings of play and held the Purple Knights to no hits or runs. Fon earned her first NCAA victory and is now 3-0 on the season.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow (May 20) at 1:30 p.m. against No. 2 Saint Anselm at the South Athletic Fields.
