Waltham, Mass. - In a match that came down to the wire, the Adelphi University men's tennis team battled to a 4-3 win over Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt Tuesday afternoon in Waltham.
It was Adelphi's first win over Bentley (1-3, 1-3 NE10) since Apr. 4, 2017. The Panthers have also won three of their last four matches, en route to improving to 3-2 in NE10 play.
The contest bubbled down to the No. 4 singles match between
Luke Attride-Stirling and Alexander Novins.
Stirling fell into an early one-set hole, but a second-set 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker turned the tide in Stirling's favor and ultimately led to a dominant 10-1 performance in the third set that won it for Adelphi.
Salomon Arce Lema continued his torrid start with a fourth-consecutive straight-set victory; a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
Gabriel Balestero accounted for the other singles win for the Panthers, securing a 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 decision in the No. 1 position.
In doubles, Lema and
Pietro Sole improved to 3-1 on the season with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 flight, while Stirling and
Andrew Ray remained undefeated at No. 3 doubles, after prevailing 7-5.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad will now face Le Moyne -- for a third time this season -- next Tuesday (Apr. 13) in Syracuse, N.Y.
