Softball Downs AIC on Day One of Weekend Series; 8-0, 6-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team took both games of the doubleheader on day one of the two-day series against American International College on Friday, 8-0 and 6-1. This series will close out the regular season as the teams push for a high seed in the Southwest Division ahead of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament.

Game 1: Adelphi 8, AIC 0 F/5
The result of game one was never in question, due in part Emily Whitman's lead-off triple that turned into a run two batters later. The second baseman went 2-for-3 on the game with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Yellow Jackets had a chance to plate one in the third inning, but Ally Muller retired the next two batters to get her team out of the inning. Adelphi turned around and pushed three across the plate during the next frame. Amanda Owens put the first of many runners in scoring position that inning with her first of two hits on the game. Owens had a 2-for-2 offensive showing with three runs scored.

Muller advanced to 14-2 on the season after throwing her 12th consecutive win, 11 resulting in shutouts. The senior was good for six strikeouts over five innings.

Game 2: Adelphi 6, AIC 1
Whitman once again jump-started the scoring for Adelphi with another lead-off triple in the nightcap. Lauren O'Neill followed Whitman with an infield single, and both runners would score, to build a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the second.

The advantage was extended to 4-0 after the bottom of the inning, with Whitman and O'Neill once again playing part in the action. Sophia Cicchetti added to the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance with one run scored and two RBI.

AIC plated one run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly, but were unable to push anymore across for the remainder of the game.

Nicole Mengel claimed the victory in the second set of the doubleheader, after throwing a complete game. She now sits at 6-3 on the season.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow against AIC to close out the regular season with a home doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
