Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team split a doubleheader with NE10 rival University of New Haven, 9-0 and 7-2, on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: Adelphi 9, New Haven 0 - F/5
The result of Game 1 was never much in doubt from the start. The Panthers scored nine runs in four innings at the plate, pushing five across in the first inning.
Molly Edge's 11-pitch at bat in the first inning set the tone for Adelphi. Edge fouled off five straight pitches before sending one to center for a two-run ground-rule double.
Ashley Lombardi knocked in three runs for Adelphi on a 2-for-2 performance.
Emily Whitman also added four runs for the Panthers, going 3-for-3 on the game with three runs scored and one RBI. The junior hit her first home run of the season in the fourth to seal the deal for the Brown and Gold.
Ally Muller secured her second shutout of the season from inside the circle. Muller saw 18 batters and struck out eight, advancing to 4-2 on the season.
Game 2: Adelphi 2, New Haven 7
New Haven got an early jump in Game Two, capitalizing on a first-inning error by Adelphi, scoring two unearned runs. The Chargers added a four-run third inning to take a 6-0 lead over the Panthers.
Lauren O'Neill put one on the board for Adelphi in the fourth, reaching on a New Haven error and scoring on a
Daniella Roselli outfield single. The Panthers searched for a sixth-inning spark, but fell short after scoring one run and leaving two stranded.
Sophomore Lindsay Hibbs made her pitching debut, tossing four innings with four strikeouts and allowing one hit.
The Panthers are back in action for Day 2 of the NE10 series against New Haven on Monday (Apr. 5). First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
