Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Loses Both Ends of Doubleheader at UNH; 14-2, 5-3

West Haven, Conn. - Senior catcher Jack Ryan drove in three runs Saturday, but the Adelphi University baseball team lost both seven-inning contests to University of New Haven, 14-2 and 5-3, at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven.

Game 1: Adelphi 2, New Haven 14
Ryan got the Panthers out to the early lead in the opener. After Matt Alifano drew a walk to open the game, Ryan doubled him in to stake Adelphi to the early 1-0 lead.

That would prove to be the only lead that Adelphi had throughout the day.

In the third, New Haven went in front and never looked back. A two-out RBI single by Andrew Bianco put the Chargers ahead, 2-1.

UNH would then tack on a combined 11 runs -- eight of which came off starter Nicolas Luc -- between the fourth and fifth innings that put the game out of reach.

The decision dropped Luc to 1-2 on the season. He gave up four earned runs and seven hits and struck out three in 3.2 innings of work.

Game 2: Adelphi 3, New Haven 5
Adelphi (4-7, 2-2 NE10) trailed 2-0 out of the gate, until Ryan came through with a one-out, two-RBI double in the third that evened the score.

UNH answered in its half of the third though and -- this time -- never relinquished the lead.

Jack Reardon and Noah Budzik led off with back-to-back singles, before Bianco slugged a 3-2 offering out of the park to give the Chargers a comfortable 5-2 advantage.

The Panthers got one back in the fifth when Alifano scored on a wild pitch, but New Haven reliever Brandon LaManna retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh to secure the save and the sweep.

Andrew Williams made the start and scattered five runs over 3.1 innings, with three strikeouts. Michael Storms struck out the side in his inning of relief.

Head Coach Dom Scala and his Adelphi squad now take a break for Easter and continue their four-game series with UNH on Monday (Apr. 5) at 3:30 p.m. in West Haven.
