Flushing, N.Y. - The No. 2 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team took its first step towards a potential NE10 title Wednesday afternoon, with a 4-1 win over No. 7 seed Assumption University in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NE10 Championship at the USTA Women's Tennis Center in Flushing.
As the match went final, the Panthers (10-1) found themselves at No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II East Region rankings.
Adelphi will next host No. 3 seed Stonehill, which won 4-1 in its quarterfinal over New Haven, in an NE10 Tournament semifinal at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday (Apr. 30) at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of that match will either meet No. 1 seed Franklin Pierce or No. 4 seed Le Moyne for the NE10 Championship on Sunday (May 2).
The Panthers' undefeated run in doubles carried into the postseason.
Barbie Quagliardi and
Nicole Kielan prevailed 6-3 at top doubles, while
Amanda Franstedt and
Nicole Stay continued their unbeaten play together with a 6-2 victory at the second flight.
Julia Kielan got Adelphi out to a strong start in singles with a 6-0, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 flight. Stay followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3. Quagliardi shut the door in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), as well, at No. 2 singles.
In the unfinished matches,
Nicole Kielan won a 9-7 tiebreaker in her first set at top singles with Julia Chappell. Franstedt was even at 3-3 in her first set at No. 3 singles against Cara McCormack at the time the match had been declared over.
