Flushing, N.Y. - Playing in its first postseason match since 2017, the No. 4 seed Adelphi University men's tennis team defeated fifth-seeded Bentley University, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The last Adelphi (6-3) win in the NE10 Tournament before today's action occurred in 2016, when the Panthers defeated Merrimack in the semifinals, 5-1, and advanced to their second-straight NE10 Championship final.
Adelphi will now look to upset No. 1 seed Le Moyne in the semifinal round on Tuesday (Apr. 27) in Syracuse, with a spot in next weekend's championship on the line.
In pairs play, Adelphi and Bentley (2-8) split the respective top- and third-doubles matches and left it to No. 2 doubles to decide who would take the team point.
It came down to a tiebreaker and
Pietro Sole and
Salomon Arce Lema broke serve in a 7-6 (7-5) victory over the Falcons' Max Bonte and Jordan Soifer.
In singles, Bentley pulled the contest even at 2-apiece and the match was left in the hands of the bottom halves of the teams' lineups.
Luke Attride-Stirling put Adelphi one point away with a straight-set 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) decision at No. 4 singles. Lema shut the door with a 6-4, 6-3 win in fifth singles.
The start time for Tuesday's NE10 semifinal at Le Moyne has not been announced yet. Stay tuned to
