Milford, Conn. - On Thursday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team closed out its regular-season slate with a flourish, winning its ninth-consecutive match with a 5-1 rout of University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Milford Indoor Tennis Center.
The win clinches the No. 2 seed in the NE10 Championship for Adelphi (9-1, 9-1 NE10), which will receive a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal match next Wednesday, Apr. 28.
The match was a make-up of a previously-postponed contest on Mar. 17. The Panthers and Chargers (5-7, 4-6 NE10) met earlier in the week though, with Adelphi prevailing 4-3 on Monday (Apr. 19).
And much like Monday's match, Adelphi swept the doubles portion, ultimately putting a clamp on an unbeaten regular season in doubles play.
Barbie Quagliardi and
Nicole Kielan won 6-2 at the top flight, while
Amanda Franstedt and
Nicole Stay never conceded a point in a 6-0 sweep in second doubles.
In singles, Quagliardi, Franstedt and
Julia Kielan all won in straight sets. Stay came back from a one-set deficit to keep her unbeaten singles record intact, via a 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 decision.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers now await word on Wednesday's opponent. The bracket is set to be announced Friday night (Apr. 23) at 8 p.m.
