Syracuse, N.Y. - It took nearly 68 minutes through double overtime for a decision in the top-10 men's lacrosse matchup, however the no. 1 ranked Dolphins of Le Moyne College scored the golden goal en route to a 15-14 victory over no. 6 Adelphi men's lacrosse Wednesday afternoon in league action.
Nicolas Racalbuto was one of five goal scorers in the loss, with a season-high five goals.
James Hall also posted a five-point afternoon, collecting three goals and two assists as teammate
Joseph Duchnowski notched his second hat trick of the season.
The home team started off with an easy two goals, within 26 seconds of each other, but the Panthers (4-2, 4-1 NE10) responded with two of their own courtesy of Duchnowski and Hall to even the score. A stalemate through the first 15 minutes, the game was time at the conclusion of the quarter, 3-3. Although Le Moyne held an advantage in shots overall in the first frame, Adelphi held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
Both teams scored four goals apiece in the second quarter, with Hall netting back-to-back tallies to close out the half. Stats were relatively even through the second period, however the home team dominated in ground balls, 13-4, due largley in part to six won faceoff attempts.
Edward Perlstein finished 16-for-34 at the X as Le Moyne's Sam Kury went 18-for-31.
Coming out of the break, the Dolphins were rolling, scoring five out of the first six goals of the half. The hosts saw five different goal scorers in that frame to take a three-goal lead, heading into the final 15 minutes of action. Two straight goals from Adelphi brought the visitors within one, in the early going of the last quarter.
John Arcidiacono teamed up with
Gordon Purdie, Jr. to get things going and Duchnowski added his tenth score of the season to come within one of Le Moyne.
The teams traded goals to still remain one tally apart until
Quintin McKenna found Racalbuto for the eventual equalizer at 4:22. Adelphi and Le Moyne both saw late shots towards goal in the closing minutes, however none landed on target, thus sending the Panthers to their second overtime game this season and the home team's first.
Kevin Rice picked up both shots on goal that the Dolphins took in the first overtime frame but Adelphi did not spend anytime in their offensive third, plagued with turnovers down the stretch.
It was
Quentin O'Reilly who landed the lone shot on goal for the Brown and Gold in the second overtime period, but Frank Delia made his third stop of the afternoon in the cage for Le Moyne, after relieving Riley Smith of his duties middway through the second quarter. A missed call on a blatant push from the home team allowed them to charge down the field and with 13 seconds on the clock, defenseman Nate Arnold scored just his second career goal to win the game.
Adelphi returns to action as the first game of a lacrosse double-dip on Saturday, April 17 when they welcome Pace University back to Garden City for their third matchup of the season. In their first meeting this season, the Panthers used an OT strike from Duchnowski to earn a 12-11 victory over the Setters.
