Springfield, Mass. - Outscoring their opponents 6-1 in the second half, the no. 9 Adelphi women's lacrosse program secured an 11-7 victory over American International College Saturday afternoon, to post a perfect 2-0 week in league action.
Christina Ferrara and
Kristina Schweitzer each recorded a hat trick in the win, with the latter adding three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Five additional team members scored as the Panthers (2-2) held an overall advantage in draw controls, shots and caused turnovers in the win.
The Panthers got off to a slow start as the hosting Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead just three minutes into the contest.
Kristina Kallansrude broke the silence for the Adelphi offense scoring at 26:13 after picking up a ground ball off a caused turnover from
Alexandra Beebe. The visiting team scored the next two to take its first lead of the game, courtesy of scores from
Gianna Bifulco and
Christina Ferrara.
The teams traded goals over the next 13 minutes, but American International got in the last word scoring at the 2:28 mark to lead 6-5 at the half. AIC's goalkeeper Chelsea Davis picked up nine saves in the opening half as the home team also held the advantage in successful clear attempts.
Kasey Flavin caused an early turnover after the Yellow Jackets won the first draw control of the second half, which allowed
Kristina Schweitzer to even the score at 6-all with her tally less than a minute in. Schweitzer added her hat trick goal within the 11-minute four-goal run for Adelphi as Ferrara added two of her own to take a 10-7 lead over the home team.
AIC was held scoreless til the 7:12 mark in the second half as the Panthers spent much of the time in their offensive third.
Kelly-Ann McGrath scored her second collegiate goal when she converted a free-position attempt to extend Adelphi's lead to four with two minutes left in regulation.
In goal for the Yellow Jackets, Chelsea Davis recorded a season-high 15 saves despite the loss.
