New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University softball team walked away from the weekend with with two victories. The Panthers swept an NE10 doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State, 2-1 and 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: Adelphi 2, SCSU 1
The Owls got off to a hot start, hitting back-to-back doubles in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short lived.
Lauren O'Neill's aggressiveness on the basepaths in Game 1 ultimately led to her scoring both the tying and go-ahead runs.
After reaching in the second on a double, she crossed home on a stolen base and wild pitch to even things up. Then, in the seventh, the senior stole second after a single to put herself in scoring position. Two batters later,
Alexa Sacripante stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and drove in O'Neill with an infield single.
SCSU had no answer to O'Neill's seventh-inning run, as the Owl batters were retired in order in their final turn at-bat.
Ally Muller earned the win in the decision for the Panthers. She struck out 10 batters in a complete-game effort,.
Game 2: Adelphi 3, SCSU 0
In Game 2,
Nicole Mengel held the Owls scoreless from inside the circle. Mengel threw a complete game that consisted of four strikeouts, three hits and two walks. She moved to 3-1 on the season with the win.
The Panthers (7-3, 5-1 NE10) got on the board early, much in part to
Hannah Pineda reaching on an error in the second inning, and eventually scoring on a
Daniella Roselli single.
One frame later, Roselli accounted for two more runs. The sophomore blasted a RBI double to center field and took home on a throwing error. Roselli went 2-for-3 on the game, had two RBIs and scored one run.
SCSU was unable to convert hits into runs in the nightcap, leaving five runners stranded on base.
