Game Recap: Baseball |

Becker's Mammoth Day Leads Baseball to Sweep of SCSU; 19-11, 6-2

Garden City, N.Y. - It was a day for Tyler Becker, as the Adelphi University baseball team took two games from Southern Connecticut State University in its first Northeast-10 Conference action of the 2021 season, on Saturday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

Becker, who entered the day's action hitting .182, boosted his average 76 points with a 4-for-9 day with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.

"We were just trying to get it going," Becker said. "We've had a slow start as a team, but we knew that if we turned it around today, it was going to be big for us. The whole lineup came out swinging today and it felt good for all of us and me to get it going and score some runs."

Game 1: Adelphi 19, SCSU 11
Although the Panthers fell into an early 1-0 hole, the bats responded in the second inning.

After a leadoff game-tying solo shot by Becker to open the frame, Adelphi sent 11 more batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the process to grab a commanding 8-1 lead.

And Becker didn't go deep once in that inning. Upon batting around, Becker stepped into the batter's box for his second at-bat of the inning and delivered a two-run homer to right-center.

SCSU battled back and pulled within 8-4, but a five-run fifth -- spearheaded by a grand slam from Matt Alifano -- put a bow on the opening contest.

Josh Rovner earned his first win of 2021, after relieving starter Tom Ambrosino and pitching four brilliant innings, giving up just one run. Ambrosino fanned four in 2.1 innings of work.

Game 2: Adelphi 6, SCSU 2
In the nightcap, Nicolas Luc looked to redeem himself after being chased out of the game in the second inning of his last start.

Aside from serving up a two-run homer in the third inning, Luc was dominant. He struck out eight over 4.2 innings and only allowed one baserunner in four of the five innings that he took the hill.

Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Alifano led off the inning with a single to put the tying run on base. A Jack Ryan sacrifice bunt moved Alifano into scoring position with only one out.

Tim Feliz then drew an eight-pitch walk and -- on that eighth pitch -- Alifano stole third safely, before an errant throw by SCSU catcher Josh Wettemann allowed him to score the tying run.

Adelphi wasn't done yet. Feliz moved into scoring position after Jose Matos was hit by a pitch, and pinch-hitter Nick Lopez, who was stepping in for his first collegiate at-bat, ripped a clutch two-out single up the middle that pushed Feliz across and gave the Panthers the lead.

The Brown and Gold never relinquished that lead. In fact, Adelphi added to it.

In the bottom of the sixth, Feliz singled through the right side of a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded, plating Alifano and Cipri for some much-needed insurance.

Michael Storms came on in relief and cleaned up to collect his first victory of 2021. The southpaw entered with two outs in the fifth to retire Andrew Eng, who homered off Luc earlier, and subsequently retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh to shut the door.

Head Coach Dom Scala and the Panthers are back in action next Friday (Apr. 2), when they open a four-game weekend series with University of New Haven in West Haven, Conn. at 3:30 p.m.
