Garden City, N.Y. - Welcoming undefeated Pace University into the Center for Recreation and Sport on Tuesday evening, the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a 58-47 loss to the Setters, as the visitors remained perfect in Northeast-10 action.
On the glass, the Panthers (6-2, 2-2 NE10) were out-rebounded by Pace 18-12 in the opening half, en route to a 40-27 effort from the visitors. The home team also nearly doubled their three-point attempts compared to their opponents, but only sank seven, on what seemed to be an off-night for the Adelphi offense.
An 8-0 run put Adelphi off to a hot start with the help of baskets from leading scorer
Chris Coalmon, but that momentum quickly cooled as the home team was plagued with turnovers and missed shots. In that stretch of nearly four minutes, neither team scored and they combined for six turnovers until
Adonis Williams broke the silence with a layup at 9:40. The Setters took their first lead of the contest after scoring nine unanswered points to make it 18-16, forcing the Panthers to call their first timeout of the game.
Coalmon knocked down back-to-back threes to regain the advantage for Adelphi, but the visitors held a 10-1 edge in scoring down the stretch to maintain a five-point lead at the break. At halftime, no member of the Panther squad had reached double-digit points.
Coming out of the locker room, Adelphi scored first but continued playing catch up for the remainder of the contest.
A defensive stop, coupled with eight unanswered points for the hosts - courtesy of
Aristotelis Sotiriou,
Jake Hlywiak and
Joshua Koulamallah - cut the Setter lead to four with under seven minutes left in regulation as Pace experienced a scoring drought spanning nearly four minutes. Jumpshots and attempts from beyond the arc continued to fall off the mark for Adelphi as the visiting team managed to find ways to keep the hosts at bay.
Near-perfect free throw shooting down the strech sealed the deal as the Panthers ultimately fell 47-58 in the low-scoring affair.
The Brown and Gold return for a non-conference bout with Dominican College this Saturday, Dec. 11. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. inside the Center for Recreation and Sport.
