Garden City, N.Y. - In a game with over 20 fouls for either side, the Adelphi University men's basketball team dropped an 84-76 decision to Dominican College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Panthers (6-3) have lost their last two outings and will close out of the year with four regional opponents. The Chargers improve to 9-1 overall this season, bouncing back from a loss this week to Northeast-10 member Southern New Hampshire University.
Adonis Williams and
Ronnie Silva each finished today's decision with 18, points, with Silva shooting a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line while adding seven defensive rebounds. Also reaching double-figure points was
Isaiah Salter, who accounted for 15 as
Aristotelis Sotiriou neared his first double-double with eight apiece in points and rebounds.
Adelphi reached their largest lead of the game early on the in the first half, as
Adonis Williams completed the three-point play to make it 32-20 at 7:03. That advantage quickly slipped away as the Chargers scored eight unanswered points to come within one with just over three minutes left in the frame, a position they would remain in as the half came to a close. For the opening 20 minutes of action, the home team shot nearly 60 percent from the field, and doubled their opponents points in the paint (24-12).
Coming out of the break, Dominican took its first lead of the contest on a three-pointer from Wahaad Johnson but a quick turnover and steal for Salter a few possessions later, returned the advantage to Adelphi, as they pushed ahead by five. The Brown and Gold were able to maintain the upper hand until the clock struck 9:39 when the Chargers' Joshuel White landed a pull up jumper to even the score at 62-all.
From that point on it was the home team playing catch up, never able to get closer than three points after the seven-minute mark. As the Chargers free-throw shooting improved in the second, Adelphi's went the opposite way after 21 trips to the charity stripe, only cashing in on 13.
Chris Coalmon barreled down the lane with a layup to bring his team within two at 1:36, however Dominican did not miss down the stretch to seal the deal for the non-conference victory.
The Adelphi men's basketball team will play one more home game before the end of 2021, on Tuesday, Dec. 14 when they host Goldey-Beacom at 7:30 p.m.
