Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team flipped the script in the second half of Thursday's non-conference battle at Molloy College but it was not enough to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit, ultimately resulting in a 69-64 loss to the Lions.
This was the second meeting of the two teams already this year, both games decided by five points.
No Adelphi player reached double-digits after the opening half, but three of five starters and
Joshua Koulamallah all finished with 10 or more points at the conclusion of the contest.
Chris Coalmon led the way with 17 points, as
Adonis Williams and Koulamallah each recorded 15 in the loss.
It was all Molloy (3-9) in the opening 20 minutes of action as they went 64 percent from three-point range compared to the Panther's 20 percent effort from beyond the arc. The home team led by at most 19 before the frame was through, only lessened by a jumper from Williams as the half came to a close.
Ten minutes expired in the second half before a Coalmon slam set the Panthers (6-4) on an 18-4 run that briefly gave the visitors a lead at 58-57, which they extended to two on back-to-back makes from the charity stripe from Williams.
The Lions responded a pair of makes from the free throw line, coupled with a three pointer that made it a two-possession game in favor of the hosts with 34 seconds left in regulation. Unable to convert, Adelphi closed out the 2021 portion of their season with a loss.
The men's basketball team was scheduled to take on the University of New Haven in a New Years' Day matchup, but the Chargers are in a pause per established institutional and health protocols. The 3:30 p.m. game on Jan. 1, 2022 will now be played at a later date.
Adelphi's next contest will be a makeup game against Bloomfield College on Jan. 3, as they take on the Bears at 6:00 p.m.
